Steel 301
301 stainless steel is an alloy belonging to the 300 series of austenitic steels, characterized by high mechanical strength and good ductility. It is known for its ability to harden by plastic deformation (work hardening), making it a versatile material in many industrial applications.
Main features of 301 raw steel
1. Typical chemical composition
- Chromium (Cr): 16-18% → Confers resistance to corrosion.
- Nickel (Ni): 6-8% → Improves toughness and corrosion resistance.
- Carbon (C): ≤ 0.15% → Increases mechanical strength but reduces weldability.
- Manganese (Mn): ≤ 2% → Improves workability and mechanical strength.
- Silicon (Si): ≤ 1% → Increases oxidation resistance.
- Iron (Fe): Balance → Main alloying element.
2. Corrosion resistance
- Good resistance in low aggressive environments (humidity, air, fresh water).
- Lower than 304 steel because it has a lower nickel content.
- Sensitive to corrosion in chloride environments (e.g., salt water).
3. High mechanical strength and hardness
- It can achieve high hardnesses (up to 600 MPa tensile strength) due to plastic deformation hardening.
- It is stronger than 304 steel in its cold-worked version.
4. Good pliability and formability
- It can be easily printed, folded and machined mechanically.
- Cold working progressively hardens it, increasing strength but reducing ductility.
5. Variable magnetism
- Unlike 304 steel, 301 becomes magnetic when cold processed.
- This makes it useful in applications that require magnetic response.
Applications of 301 raw steel
Due to its combination of mechanical strength, ductility and machinability, 301 steel is used in a variety of industries:
- Aerospace and automotive → For springs, structural components and parts subject to high stress.
- Electronics industry → For connectors, EMI/RFI shielding and spring parts.
- Precision tools → For industrial blades, tools and watch components.
- Seat belts and springs → Due to its high resistance to fatigue.
Differences between 301 steel and other stainless steels
301 steel is preferred over 304 when more mechanical strength is sought and maximum corrosion resistance is not required. However, for marine or highly corrosive environments, 316 is the best choice.
Conclusion
Raw steel 301 is a strong, versatile and relatively inexpensive material suitable for applications requiring high mechanical strength and formability, but without the need for exceptional corrosion resistance.
